In the July 15 edition of the Sun Journal, Walt Pulkinen complained he was unable to find the answer to what he called “a simple question”: What biblical principle did Gov. John Baldacci use to justify signing the gay marriage proposal?

The simple answer to his question should be “None.”

While many Americans use the Christian Bible to guide their lives, in this country, citizens are free to practice any religion they please, or none at all. Not all Americans, or all Mainers, are Christians. Laws must apply to all of us regardless of our spiritual beliefs.

I certainly hope Gov. Baldacci does not base his decisions on the teachings of a holy book, be it the Bible, the Qu’ran, or any other. The law is for everyone.
