100 years ago, 1909

Seldom has the city of Lewiston witnessed so fierce a fire as that which broke out shortly after 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon in the block on Sabattus Street owned by J. B. Lamontagne and which is in the process of construction. The fire spread rapidly and at one time eight houses were threatened with complete destruction and about as many more were burning. There have been several theories advanced as to the cause of the fire, but as yet the officials have not determined the exact cause.

50 years ago, 1959

Dollar Days, those two glorious days when the “good ol’ honest-to-gosh” bargains are featured in most Lewiston and Auburn stores, will hold forth in the Twin Cities this Friday and Saturday, July 24 and 25. One of this year’s Dollar Day features will be a treasure hunt on both days. Gift certificates worth $5 worth of merchandise will be hidden in the stores participating in the bargain days. More than 40 stores are taking part in this year’s Dollar Days program.

25 years ago, 1984

Site plans for a proposed $4.1-million performing arts center at Bates College will be reviewed by the Lewiston Planning Board Tuesday night.

The Planning Board will consider the private college’s application for a site-location permit to build the facility.

Bates’ Vice President for Business Affairs and Treasurer Bernard Carpenter said Thursday plans for the Olin Music and Arts Building are on schedule. Bates expects to go out for bid for construction next January, with construction to begin the following April and be completed by September 1986.
