LEWISTON – This summer’s noonday concert series at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul continues on Wednesday, July 29, with a performance by Christopher Michael Ganza, who has been playing the organ since age 9.
Ganza studied with Ray Cornils of Brunswick for nine years. At age 11, he assumed the duties of organist for Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield and the Universalist-Unitarian Church of Waterville. He remained at both positions until leaving for college in 2006.
Ganza is now a senior at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., majoring in church music performance, and studies organ with John Ferguson. During summers, he has served as organist for Penney Memorial United Baptist Church of Augusta and currently serves at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Brunswick. When he returns to school in the fall, Ganza will assume the position of organ scholar at St. Louis, King of France Catholic Church in St. Paul, Minn.
The summer concert series at the basilica offers half-hour programs beginning at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesdays during July and August. Featured are accomplished musicians from all over the country. The concerts are free and open to the public. Donations for the organ restoration fund are much appreciated.
