Now that the Cowan Mill is no longer a safety issue, I hope the city of Lewiston is able to preserve the foundation of the mill as well as the archaeological treasure that lies below it.

In his urgency to protect, Justice Thomas Delahanty seems to have given city officials legal authority to do whatever they choose to prepare the site for the hotel which will someday grace the shore.

Hopefully the city will have the wisdom to appreciate the historical/archaeological significance and save the foundation of the mill, which has withstood all that the mighty Androscoggin River has been able to throw at it during the past 150 years.

Unfortunately, an unintended consequence of making the site safe is that the evidence to help us understand who burned the mill and why is no longer available.
