PARIS — Current town office hours will remain in effect despite fewer hours for some office staff, selectmen decided Monday.

Under a budget approved at the annual town meeting in June, the hours for the town clerk and two deputy clerks in the office were reduced from 40 per week to 36. Interim Town Manager Michael Thorne said the reduction went into effect this week, and that one clerk has been leaving early each day. He said the operating system is working, but has the potential to leave the office shorthanded.

“There are going to be times when a clerk’s going to be on vacation or someone’s going to be out sick, and then you’re only going to have one clerk managing the clerk’s office for at least four hours of one day,” he said. “That can get problematic.”

Thorne said he brought the issue to the board to see if members prefer the option of closing the office four hours early on one day of the week.

Selectman Raymond Glover said he would prefer to continue alternating the times when clerks leave early.

“I’m not in favor of reducing services at this time,” he said.

Selectmen unanimously approved keeping the town office open for the full week. The hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
