100 years ago, 1909

As the result of a double shooting affray about 10 o’clock Sunday evening Charles Buker and Nellie Miller, both of this city, are at the C.M.G. Hospital where at an early hour this morning their condition was reported as favorable. The shooting occurred on Lowell street in front of the house occupied by Mrs. Myrtle Yates. Neither of the parties would talk but Leontine Dechene, who claims to have witnessed the affair, says that the Miller girl fired the shots. Several witnesses are being held to tell their versions of the affair.

50 years ago, 1959

George Parker, Auburn parking district officer who has been rough on motorists with parking tickets, met with active aggression yesterday from a dog.

Parker was bitten on the calf of one leg late in the forenoon while making his rounds. The incident occurred at Summer and Union streets. The dog is owned by Howard Bailey, police said.

The parking officer was treated by a doctor and Bailey was notified by Auburn police that the dog had bitten Parker.

25 years ago, 1984

PORTLAND — Plans are shaping up for a parade of Olympic heroes through downtown Portland next week. Honored by the parade will be marathon gold medalist Joan Benoit as well as champion rowing team member Holly Metcalf and baseball pitcher Billy Swift. The Intown Portland Exchange said Tuesday that nothing’s definite, but tentatively set a parade time of noon on Wednesday, Aug. 22.
