Sharply increased use of water in both Auburn and Lewiston combined with several extremely hot days has resulted in drops in the water levels of reservoirs serving the cities.

Earle A. Tarr, assistant superintendent of the Auburn Water District, said that the water levels in their reservoirs had dropped considerably since the start of the heat wave.

Tarr said that Auburn lost more than six inches of water level yesterday.

There is still plenty of water Lake Auburn, he added, but residents must be careful in their use of water and observe the sprinkling hours.

Brief showers Sunday, Monday and again yesterday helped a little, but none was of sufficient duration to bring about a rise in the dropping water level.
