One hundred thousand is a conservative estimate of the number of French-Canadians in the State of Maine. This calculation, of course, includes children born in this State of French-Canadian parents. A census taken by Charles Thibault of Montreal in 1881 gave the State of Maine a French Canadian population of 19,095. The last census, taken with great care in 1908 by Odule Laplante of Lewiston, gave the population of French-Canadian extraction in this State as 91,567.

The official announcement of Lewiston’s tax rate for the 1959-60 fiscal year probably will be made late next week by the Board of Assessors.

That was the word yesterday from the city’s three assessors — Ernest J. Desjardins, Stephen J. Murray and Cyprien A. Levesque.

The official rate is expected to be 59 mills, up two mills from the tax rate for the last fiscal year.

Suzanne Renaud has been named station representative for WCSH-TV’s Lewiston studio, according to WCSH General Manager Lew Colby.

Ms. Renaud is available throughout the area for public-speaking engagements, media relations and public-service liaison.

Colby said her appointment is a phase in the station’s ever-increasing commitment to the Lewiston-Auburn area. In addition to her other duties, Ms. Renaud will help the WCSH Program Department organize the Maine State Holiday Parade to be held on Nov. 24.
