DIXFIELD — The following incidents were handled recently by the Dixfield Police Department.

Theft

A Kidder Avenue resident reported the theft of a five-diamond engagement ring and a wedding ring valued at $3,000 at 11 a.m. Aug. 22. The theft from the unlocked vehicle parked in the owner’s yard is believed to have taken place between July 27 and July 31. Police have leads.

Vandalism

A resident on his way to work at 7:25 a.m. Aug. 22 reported that several young people removed one of the four concrete pillars at the entrance to Dirigo High School. Charges are expected against two juveniles.

Illegal dumping

An East Dixfield resident reported at 12:12 p.m. Aug. 22 that someone dumped several car parts, believed to have come from an older model Ford Mustang, on a back lot of his property. The auto parts included two front fenders and a front section of the vehicle.

Accident

A horse lost its life due to a freak accident at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 25 on Route 2 near MT Pockets. Sgt. Jeff Howe said a neighbor of the horse’s owner was asked to retrieve the horse that had escaped its pen. The neighbor slowly drove his pickup truck along the shoulder of the road in the direction of his home, leading the horse with a rope through the passenger side of the vehicle. When a tractor-trailer truck behind the pickup honked its horn, the horse jumped in front of the pickup and was hit. A leg was broken and the horse had to be put down. The vehicle sustained no damage. The driver was unhurt.
