FARMINGTON — When new students arrive this weekend at the University of Maine at Farmington, they will be the first to receive school orientation information electronically.

The numerous paper copies carrying campus information were eliminated this year. Instead the students will receive a USB port 1 Gigabyte flash drive. These small storage devices, slightly larger than a stick of gum, can transport files from one computer to another and give students information in a way they are accustomed to receiving it —  by computers.

The new method saves trees and contributes to UMF’s effort to reduce its carbon footprint, said April Mulherin of the university.

Resident halls will open Saturday for first-year students. Convocation takes place Tuesday and classes for all students begin Wednesday, Sept. 2, she said.

New student identification will be issued this year. The IDs will have a higher level of security because ID numbers will not be associated with the student’s Social Security number, she said.

In the resident halls, resident assistants will become community assistants this year. Instead of organizing events for a particular dorm, the assistants will work together to create campus events enhancing the campus-wide experience for all students, she said.
