That was more like it.
Sam Grenache played like his usual, gritty self, Matt Boyle didn’t waste any time making his physical presence known on the blue line, and the offense started to come together a bit Friday night as the Lewiston Maineiacs dispatched Shawinigan 4-1 at Centre Bionest in a preseason game.
“We’re not excited, necessarily, but pleased,” Maineiacs’ coach Don MacAdam said. “We came off the bus really strong, which we did not do last week, and we didn’t dig any holes for ourselves, which is always a good thing on the road.”
Oskar Orrpars and Sebastien Trudeau each had a goal and an assist to pace the offense. Billy Lacasse scored on a penalty shot in the second period, and Alex Beaton added an empty-netter to cap the scoring late in the third.
“The first two periods, Oskar was outstanding offensively,” MacAdam said. “Sebastien plays a quiet game. He knows where to go. He’s not a guy that’s going to pull you out of your seat, but he’s a really smart player.”
One area in which MacAdam saw improvement was in the faceoff circle. The Maineiacs held a 41-31 edge in that stat, with Lacasse leading the way at 6-for-6. Beaton was 14-of-21 in that department, too.
“The more important thing is winning the faceoffs in the situations where you really need to win them,” MacAdam said. “We were solid in the faceoff circle, for sure.”
Physically, the Maineiacs answered the bell, too. Newly-acquired Matt Boyle and Lewiston-born defenseman Eric Bonawitz each fought on the same play in the second frame, and after being outhit early, Lewiston fought back.
“I thought, if anything, they outhit us in the first half of the game, but we like how our guys responded physically to them the rest of the way,” MacAdam said. “They’re a big team, they’re a very good team.”
Cole Hawes had the lone goal for the Cataractes.
Lewiston and Shawinigan will battle again Sunday in Lewiston at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee at 4 p.m.
