Sandra J. Salmonson

1963 – 2009

AUBURN – Sandra J. Salmonson, 46, of Poland, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday , Aug. 29, after a courageous two year battle with multiple sclerosis.


She was born in Lewiston on May 21, 1963, the youngest of six children to Ernest and Janice Avery Fitts. She attended school in Poland and for 25 years was a 911 dispatcher for the Poland and Raymond Fire Rescue Departments, retiring due to ill health.

She was a member of the Poland Fire Department where she met her husband, Richard Salmonson, and they were married Oct. 7, 1989. She was a civil war buff, Joshua Chamberlain was her hero. She enjoyed traveling with her mother and sister and on one trip placed a flag of remembrance on the 20th Maine monument in Gettysburg. Sandra enjoyed camping and fishing up North, collecting angels and stuffed animals. She loved people and had a wonderful sense of humor, her pets, Callie and Sammie, were her children.


She is survived by her husband, Richard, of Poland; her parents of West Poland; brother, Ernest Fitts III of South Paris; sister, Kathy Goforth and Ron Ward of West Bowdoin; brother, Ronald Fitts and Tracy Wheeler of South Paris; brother, Richard Fitts and his wife, Colleen, of South Paris; and brother, James Fitts and Lori Cotton of North Carolina; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.


The family would like to thank Karen Turcotte, Dr. Nathan Raby and Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice Care for the wonderful care they provided Sandra.
