POLAND — Authorities spent nearly three hours Monday evening searching for a man dressed in black and wielding a knife who approached a home on Webster Way, just off Bailey Hill Road.

Deputy Eric Samson with the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office said the incident was reported at about 5:30 p.m. He said James Webster of 18 Webster Way called authorities from work to report that his 12-year-old son called to tell him that he saw a man in black holding a knife in the driveway.

Samson said the boy told his father that the man was walking toward the house, but ran off into the woods behind the residence when he noticed him standing in the window and the family dog started barking. Webster told authorities that recently someone came to the front door of the residence and was scared off when his daughter-in-law yelled, the deputy said.

Samson said there are a series of trails through the woods behind the residence. The trail system spiders out to Range Pond Campground, and authorities searched as much of the area as possible.

Samson said deputies were joined by troopers from Maine State Police and a tracking dog, which lost the scent it was following at a brook. The search was called off at about 8:15 p.m.
