Air Force Col. Anthony M. Butters has assumed command of the 60th Operations Group at Travis Air Force Base, Fairfield, Calif.

As commander, Butters is responsible for the daily operations of the largest air mobility wing in the Air Force. The wing has $9.6 billion in assets, the group is tasked with operating the C-5 Galaxy, C-17 Globemaster III and the KC-10 Extender aircraft on worldwide air-land and air refueling missions.

Butters previously served as deputy commander of the 437th Operations Group at Charleston Air Force Base, North Charleston, S.C. The colonel has served in the military for 24 years.

He is the son of Muriel Butters and brother of MerrieLee Ojeda and Betty Anne Hastings, all of Bethel. The colonel is a 1980 graduate of Telstar Regional High School, Bethel. He received a bachelor’s degree in 1984 from the University of Maine at Orono, and earned a master’s degree in 1994 from Webster University, St. Louis, Mo.
