PHILLIPS —Toothaker Pond will undergo a draw-down beginning on Saturday, Sept. 12. The project is being carried out by the Toothaker Pond Association under the direction of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection in an effort to reduce high levels of phosphorus, which contribute to algae blooms.
The draw-down will consist of 18 inches of water being drained out of the pond. Geologists estimate that the pond will recharge itself by the time the snow melts, perhaps sooner. The project should last approximately 10 days and end on Sept. 22.
During that time the association requests the public to refrain from boating, fishing and other activities at the pond. It is vital not to disturb the shoreline during that period. Questions related to the project may be directed to environmental engineer Nancy O’Toole at 639-3033.
