100 years ago, 1909

Tuesday afternoon the chief’s call for Lewiston was sounded to get a crew of men together to send out to fight the forest fire which had started on Grove Street. It is thought that the fire was started by berrying parties. The fire is on what was the Joseph Carville farm and was reported to have spread to the Ezra Carville property and also to be working towards the land of W. H. Osgood on the Chadbourne Road. A crew of 10 men was sent out from Lewiston being assisted by men from the nearby places.

50 years ago, 1959

The orientation institute for new teachers in the Auburn elementary schools will open at 9 o’clock this morning at Washburn School with a get-acquainted coffee.

Schools Supt. Lewis E. Webber and John B. Annett of the Auburn Superintending School Committee will greet the new teachers.

The institute extends over two days and will cover language arts and the Auburn elementary curriculum.

Wilfred Maheux and his son Larry are no newcomers to barbering. Together, they’ve been in the business for a grand total of 83 years — Wilfred for 54 years and Larry for 29. Their barber shop, Maheux’s Barber Shop at 394A Lisbon St., is the oldest continuously run business on Lewiston’s Lisbon Street and may well be the oldest barbershop in the Twin Cities.
