BOOTHBAY – Local and nationally known sports legends and Hall of Famers are making arrangements to meet for the 19th annual Boothbay Charities Classic golf tournament, lobster bake and sports auction. Sept. 25 and 26 mark the dates for this exciting event. All proceeds will go to benefit Special Olympics Maine. Whether it’s football, baseball, hockey, racing or golf, we will likely have something for the sports fan in you.
Returning sports celebrities and enthusiasts will include Ted Hendricks, Ben Davidson, Otis Sistrunk, Earl Morrall, Garo Yepremian, Wilbur Wood, David O’Brian, Thomas Yewcik, Steve Minich, Tom Keating, Dan Sullivan, Cindy Choate, Tom Mack, Tom Stephens, John Kameisha, Dot Petty, Michaeil Price, Jeff Peterson, Robin Cole, Peter Laddme, and Miss Teen Maine Jordan Shiers. Some current Sea Dogs players will also attend. This list will be updated as the event nears.
Team openings and limited individual golfer positions are still available for Saturday mornings golf tournament, which includes guaranteed pairing with a celebrity, an awesome goodie bag provided by tournament sponsors, and a seat at Friday night’s lobster bake and sports auction. A silent sports auction will be available for public viewing and bidding from 3:30 through 5:30 p.m. on Friday the 25th at Railway Village Meeting Hall. Results will be announced later that evening. All fans are welcome. The Lobster Bake will take place under the Big Top at the Railway Village at 4 p.m. Friday and is a great opportunity for the public to mix and mingle with the celebrities. Chicken is also available.
The live sports auction follows the feast at 6 p.m. and is free to the public. A few items include: Baseballs autographed by Red Sox greats and Hall of Famers Dennis Eckersley and Wade Boggs; a 1967 “Impossible Dream” team ball signed by Red Sox players Mike Andrews, Rico Pwtrocwlli, Carl Yaz Yastrzemski, and Jim Lonborg; basketballs signed by Celtics greats and NBA champions Glen “Big Baby” Davis, John “Hondo” Havlicek, and Bob Cousy; footballs signed by NFL champions and hall of famers Otto Graham, Joe Montana, and Jim Kelly; jerseys signed by Bruins great and NHL hall of famer Ray Bourque, NFL champions and hall of famer Joe Namath, and Portland Sea Dogs and Red Sox pitching prospect Mike Bowden.

Saddleback Challenge bike race
RANGELEY – Rangeley Lakes Trail Center will host the Rangeley Lakes Saddleback Challenge II mountain bike event at 10 a.m. this Sunday, September 6.
The event is a true back-country race offering a great mix of a fast track gravel road, wide woods trails, and challenging single-track with narrow bridge crossings. The whole course includes a mere 200 feet of vertical, so hills are short. Come to the Trails Center where moose tracks are plentiful and sightings are common. New for 2009, a technical single track section has been added as part of the course for expert/jr. expert/single speed riders.

Lewiston Ice Dawgs tryouts
LEWISTON – The 2009-10 Lewiston Ice Dawgs middle school hockey season is set to begin, Tryouts will take place at 6:50 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11 at Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
The Ice Dawgs play out of the Southern Maine Middle School Tier I league. Any boy or girl in grades six through eight attending any school in Lewiston or Sabattus is eligible to try out. Please register online with USA Hockey and bring a copy of this year’s USA Hockey registration receipt to the tryout.
Season will consist of roughly 16 games as well as practices. There will be a $20 non-refundable tryout fee. The team also will take names of possible volunteers for the upcoming season.

Auburn Rec Pee Wee Soccer
AUBURN – Auburn Recreation is now taking registrations for Pee Wee Soccer, a program for students ages 4 and 5.
Games will be played Saturday afternoons aat Lower Pettengill Field (baseball outfield). There will be a six-game schedule. Each player will receive a team t-shirt.
Registration is ongoing from now to Sept. 18. The program takes place weekly from Sept. 26 to Oct. 31. Fee is $25 for residents or $35 for non-residents. You may register online aat www.auburnmaine.org under the Online Services column, or in person at the rec office in Hasty Community Center.

Maranacook Youth Hockey
KENTS HILL – Area boys and girls ages 4 to 14 are invited to Maranacook Youth Hockey registration Saturday, Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Alfond Center at Kents Hill School.
The league focuses on fun, teamwork, sportsmanship and family. There is s set schedule of practice times and days, and everyone plays. Practices will begin Oct. 13.
There will be free skating from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., so players are invited to bring their skates.
Players must be preregisted at www.USAHockey.com, which is a $42 fee. Please print and bring the registration form with you. League registration fees are $300 for U16 girls, $450 for Mites (8 and under), and $550 for Squirts, Peewees and Bantams). At least half the fee is due at registration, with the balance paid by Dec. 31. Atoms (new skaters and under 6) are $5 per week. A $100 discount is offered for each additional child. Used equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
