WILTON — Selectmen authorized creating two town committees Tuesday.

Public Works foreman John Welch asked the board to create a committee to review town roads to determine what, when and how much work and repaving will be done before next year’s budget process. The committee would include Welch, Town Manager Rhonda Irish, a selectman and residents.

Voters appropriated $200,000 for the Highway Reconstruction Program at the June town meeting, after a lengthy discussion on which roads would receive work this summer.

Selectman Paul Gooch recommended that the committee’s work be completed by October or November so the board can inspect and compare the roads before snow is on the ground.

A town cemetery committee was suggested by the town manager. The committee would review the rules, regulations and prices for the cemetery, Irish said.

Selectmen suggested the committee look at roads within the cemetery and the cemetery signs.

There was a cemetery committee nine years ago that also worked on the cemetery’s trust fund, Selectman Tom Saviello said.

Some smaller cemeteries within the town are also the town’s responsibility. These have some toppled stones that need to be cared for, and it would be nice to have more town input through citizen committee members, Irish said.

Committee members would be appointed by the board for specific terms, she said.
