LEWISTON — “The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies,” a 2009 PBS NOVA documentary film, will be shown Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the Lewiston Public Library.

The free public viewing will be at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s Couture Room on the first floor.

Every year, 100 million monarch butterflies set off on a journey across North America, flying 2,000 miles to reach a tiny area high in the mountains of Mexico. Through stunningly detailed photography, “The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies” reveals this marvel of survival, visiting the spectacular locations that they call home.

Following the one-hour film, Sherie Blumenthal and Denise Dill, local residents who traveled to the monarch wintering grounds in Michoacan, Mexico this past February, will talk about their trip and share photographs.

The library has been raising monarch caterpillars for the last few weeks as part of its Cornerstones of Science Monarch project and the Monarch Butterfly Rearing and Tagging program put on by the Monarch Watch at the University of Kansas. The first of the 16 LPL monarchs began to hatch a few days ago, with the rest of them expected to emerge as butterflies early next week.

No registration is required for the film showing. For more information, call 513-3135.
