Lewiston and Auburn hunters will do well to remember when out in the woods, that there is a law against killing gray squirrels, the law in question being Chapter 85 of the Public Laws of 1907, which states that these squirrels cannot be hunted or killed at any time or anywhere in the State. The penalty is a fine of $20 for each offense. The same law refers to black squirrels.
50 years ago, 1959
Lewiston public and parochial schools opened there doors to nearly 9,000 pupils yesterday morning with first-day programs apparently going off without a hitch.
Both public and parochial students rode the buses as usual.
In the homes, mothers grabbed a cup of coffee and enjoyed a few minutes relaxation after getting the tots off to class for the start of another school year.

The executive director of Northeast Bank’s Central Division is leading a major sector in this fall’s fund-raising campaign for the United Way of Androscoggin County.
Lewiston resident Ronald L. Beauchesne is chairing the Financial, Insurance, Accounting and Realtors Division, which includes about 100 firms, 50 major employee campaigns and 75 individuals.
“This important sector contributed $74,500 to last year’s campaign,” campaign Chairman Thomas N. Hackett noted. The upcoming fund drive will support 19 area human-service, health-care and recreation agencies that serve 35,000 people in this county and New Gloucester.
