RUMFORD — Survivors of heart disease and stroke are honored every year during the American Heart Association Heart Walk. This year, they will lead all the walkers onto the Hosmer Field track for a once around the field at 9:30 a.m. They will also be asked to form the shape of a heart again and have their photo taken.
The Mountain Valley High School cheerleaders are preparing a paper heart for the survivors to break through onto the field. In addition, the cheerleaders will lead the entire group in loosening up exercises just before the walk.
Other volunteers include the Civil Air Patrol and the Mexico Explorers, who will act as crossing guards along the two- and four-mile routes. The one-mile route uses the walk by the Swift River. The two-mile route takes walkers to the island and back on Waldo and Hancock streets. The four-mile walk runs through Mexico to the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge, then to the island and back to Hosmer Field.
Anyone interested in walking in the Heart Walk may call Community Relations at Rumford Hospital at 369-1143 to learn what organizations are fielding teams. For general information, go to www.centralmaineheartwalk.org.
