Human rights are, sadly, one of those things that rarely enter our minds until they are a personal issue. We see this plainly throughout history. When women did not have equal rights, it was women and those who cared about them who fought tirelessly for women’s rights. When African-Americans did not have equal rights, it was African-Americans and those who cared about them who fought tirelessly for the rights of blacks.

Today, there is another struggle going on in America: same-gender couple rights. Once again, we see same-gender couples and those who care about them tirelessly fighting for their equal rights.

Doesn’t this country have enough evidence behind it at this point in history to see that equal rights for all is the answer? You never meet anyone who would like their rights taken away, but some of the very same people who take their own rights for granted will fight to the end to keep other human beings from those very same rights.

I do not advocate for or support special rights for any group of people, but I do advocate for and strongly support equal rights for every human being.
