AUBURN — An Auburn woman was transported voluntarily to an area hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after she attempted to enter several cars on Court Street Sunday afternoon.

“She was hollering at me to call the police and when I grabbed my cell phone to do so, she knocked it out of my hand,” said an Auburn woman whose car the woman entered while she was stopped in traffic. “I jumped out of the car after she knocked the phone out of my hand.”

The driver, who asked not to be identified, said that she was taking her 14-year-old nephew home to Sabattus at around 4:30 p.m. when she observed the woman walking down the middle of Court Street in the area of Goff Hill. She said that the woman was very disheveled and was going from car to car knocking on windows and asking drivers to call the police.

She said that when she slowed down to ask the woman if she was OK, the woman jumped into the back seat of her car before she could lock the doors. The driver told her nephew to leave the car, and after the woman became very agitated, the driver got out also. The driver said that the woman then left her car and continued to try to get into other vehicles — including one car that drove off while she was still holding onto the door, dragging her several feet.

Auburn Police Sgt. Eric Audette said that the woman was not charged with anything as she was experiencing mental issues and needed professional help. He said that the woman did not harm anyone.

“If this woman just jumped in her car because she had mental issues, then there is no crime,” Audette said, adding that “This lady needs help and we’re getting her help.”
