The Hebron Historical Society’s Aug. 25 program was a presentation by society Director Charles Tobie of Hebron. Tobie related the American Civil War experiences of his relative Edward P. Tobie from Lewiston. Edward enlisted early in the war and served until the end in the First Maine Cavalry. He was made the Regimental Historian and after the war authored the book "The History of The First Maine Cavalry." Charles recently received a leather bound book made by his relative containing copies of newspaper articles he had written after the war. A Massachusetts citizen noticed the book in a town transfer station swap shop, realized its significance, looked up the Tobie family near Lewiston and sent it to Charles. The articles gave a detailed look at Edward and the life of a soldier throughout the war. The next meeting of the society will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Hebron Town Office, with the program to be determined. The public is invited to attend.
