DIXFIELD — St. Dom’s fast start overwhelmed in a Mountain Valley Conference girls’ soccer game Tuesday.
Senior co captains Alexander Landry and Ali Desjardins each scored two goals and the Saints turned up their intensity en route to a 5-0 shutout over Dirigo at sunny Harlow Park.
St. Dom’s used its experience to work the ball around to spread the field.
“We’ve been able to succeed because of our family chemistry,” Landry said. “We are a close group and trust each other to be in (position) on the field and it has been working out for us so far.”
The Saints (4-0-2) made their mark when Desjardins led Landry, who beat a defender and dribbled in on Dirigo goalie Kym Dolloff, who had stayed back in the crease. Dolloff went to the ground and Landry bounced the ball in to the back of the net. Exactly one minute later, Desjardins scored in to the right corner following a pass from Sophie Goulet with 22:58 left in the first half.
“Those two quick goals definitely helped,” Landry said. “We (feed) off that as a team and continue to play hard. The communication on the field was very positive.”
Dirigo (2-4) was unable to get untracked and was always a step behind on leading passes. Cassie Moretto was wide left with a shot and minutes later, was unable to connect with Emily Mini Chase who was whistled off sides.
The Saints maintained the pressure in the second half and it led to a corner being called. Anna Bolduc (two assists) booted the ball in to the center and Hailey Girardin redirected a header from 12 yards in to the goal.
“The team came out strong in the second half,” Saints coach Kathy Little said. “They did some good things beginning with scoring off a corner. They played with more intensity, but kept their composure and the offensive execution was good.”
Dirigo maintained some offensive pressure and had several chances on shots by Paige Murphy, Erin Turner, Nataile Bolduc and Kelly Gould. In one sequence, the Cougars displayed good ball movement with passes by Moretto to Jane Heber to Turner to Lexi Noyes. The shot was cleared by Becky Trytek and secured a shutout for goalie Elise Applegate (five saves).
“This would have been a big game to ((win),”Dirigo coach Art Chamberlin said. “We need to beat a top team at this point to move up in (Heal Points) standings. We have a chance at Mt. Abram on Friday.”
Dirigo spent the rest of the game shuffling players in and out as Desjardins and Landry completed the scoring.
