LEWISTON — “Music for String Orchestra” will fill the Franco-American Heritage Center concert hall Saturday, Sept. 26.

The Maine Music Society’s string ensemble will perform masterpieces composed for the smaller orchestra, including the Dvorak Serenade for Strings in E major.

This is an early Dvorak work composed in 1875, said John Corrie, artistic director of the Maine Music Society. “It’s almost a mood painting of the joy of being in love with his wife and children.”

Kathleen McNerney will be oboe soloist for the Ralph Vaughan Williams Oboe Concerto, a piece she chose. Corrie pointed out that the Oboe Concerto showcases the stamina required by the soloist on the instrument.

He also noted that this 1944 piece by Vaughn Williams includes the composer’s typical inclusion of a familiar folk song theme near the end.

To conclude the evening, the players will perform the Violin and Oboe Double Concerto in C minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. Dean Stein, formerly of the DaPonte String Quartet, will be violin soloist for the Bach concerto.

Corrie will conduct the performances and will also play the harpsichord.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, call L/A Arts at 782-7228 or the Maine Music Society at 782-1403. More information may be found online at www.mainemusicsociety.org.
