LEWISTON — The book “The Whale and the Supercomputer” will be the focus of a reading and discussion series at the Lewiston Public Library. The three-part series, which will be facilitated by Bates College anthropology professor Loring Danforth, will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 29, Oct. 6 and 13.

“The Whale and the Supercomputer” is a multi-faceted examination of the impact of global warming on arctic weather patterns. The award-winning book takes a close look at two completely different cultures – the Inupiaq Eskimos who live and hunt along the coast of the Arctic Ocean in Alaska and Western scientists attempting to comprehend climate change – and demonstrates how much they have in common. Described as part anthropology, part science and part adventure story, the work is highly informative yet accessible to the general reader.

The discussion series will be held in the library’s first-floor Couture Room and is free and open to the public. To register for the program and borrow a copy of the book, stop by the Lewiston Public Library’s circulation desk, call 513-3134 or e-mail [email protected].
