The much needed rain has come at last and the farmers, many of whom have been obliged to haul water several miles during the drouth, are now happy. Wells that have been dry for months are now replenished. The rain has been almost continuous since last Saturday night and the end of the storm is not yet in sight.

50 years ago, 1959

Arrangements for the arrival tomorrow in Lewiston of the national head of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks have been completed, according to an announcement last night by Joseph Winner, exalted ruler of the Lewiston lodge of Elks.

The Grand Exalted Ruler, William S. Hawkins of Idaho, will arrive in Lewiston in the afternoon and will be a guest at the Lewiston Elks home.

Hawkins served in numerous positions on the local and national levels of the BPOE before being elected to his present office at the national BPOE convention in July at Chicago.

25 years ago, 1984

The Lewiston Housing Authority will receive a $ 2,656,000 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Sen. William Cohen announced Thursday.

The funding will be used for the modernization and upgrading of existing public housing projects, including Hillview, Lafayette and Rosedale Acres.

The award was administered under the Comprehensive Improvement Assistance Program operated By HUD.
