Society open

STRATTON – The Dead River Area Historical Society will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Oct. 10.

On display in the museum are artifacts, manuscripts and photographs that have been donated or loaned by interested townspeople and descendants of original families of the Dead River Region. Collections from 1850 and later include old carpentry and logging tools, china, glass, church organ, furniture from native families, a complete schoolroom, a memorial room to the “lost” towns of Flagstaff and Dead River, the lineage of several native families and a host of memorabilia from native homesteads. The 2010 calendars will also be on sale.

Budget workshop

FARMINGTON – Women, Work and Community will offer a free “Build A Budget That You Can Live With” workshop from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Camden National Bank.

Participants will learn to track expenses, wise use of credit and how to reduce debt, share money savings tips, and how to build a budget.

Contradance

FARMINGTON – Contradances with a sit-in band will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, at the West Farmington Grange, Bridge Street, Route 43. Yankee Soul Revue with Kim Roberts will be calling and all dances are taught. The family dance will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., $2/$1. The second dance will be held from 8 to 11 p.m., $6/$5. Apple festival

FARMINGTON – An Apple Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Fairbanks School Meeting House, Route 4, 2 ½ miles north of downtown Farmington.

Highlights will include demonstrations, artisans, cider pressing, spinning, crocheting, candle making, wood turning, scrap booking, dehydrating, basket making, glass blowing, tatting, snowshoe lacing, flowers and sewing. There will be a food table and luncheon, a 50/50 raffle and kid’s corner.

It will be held rain or shine. Proceeds will go to the Fairbanks School Neighborhood Association. For more information, call 778-3808 or 778-4272.
