SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Adam Shemansky scored his first collegiate goal, but the University of Maine dropped its season-opener 4-1 to Union College on Friday night.

The Black Bears (0-1) took a 1-0 lead at 16:29 of the second period. On the power play, Maine’s Brian Flynn had a shot from the point that was tipped by Spencer Abbott to the right of the Union goalie. The puck went right to Shemansky, who was able to beat the Union goalie.

The Dutchmen (1-0) answered just 17 seconds later when John Simpson beat Maine’s goalie. Union took a 2-1 lead 6:20 into the third period when Jeremy Walsh battled in a loose puck that was sitting in the Maine crease.

Goalie Dave Wilson made 14 saves in the game, while goalie Corey Milan turned away an impressive 27 shots to earn the win in net for Union College.
