LEWISTON — The race to represent Ward 2 on the City Council narrowed Monday afternoon when candidate Andrew MacIsaac officially withdrew his name.

MacIsaac said he was endorsing candidate Don D’Auteuil for the position.

“I think we appeal to the same demographic,” MacIsaac said. “I think he’s seen the same things I’ve seen in the City Council and has the same desire to work things out. So, we’d only draw votes away from each other. He has a good vision for what he wants to happen, so I hope this helps him win.”

MacIsaac officially withdrew his name from the Ward 2 race late Monday, said City Clerk Kathy Montejo. The ballots and absentee ballots have already been printed so his name will appear at the polls.

But Montejo said she needs to see if she can post a notice at the Ward 2 polling location advising voters that MacIsaac has dropped out.

“We can send out a press release and tell anybody that asks,” she said. “But we need to see if we can post something or not.”

There are now three candidates running for the Ward 2 seat: D’Auteuil of 368 East Avenue, Doreen Christ of 419 College St., and Renee Bernier of 20 Ware St.

MacIsaac said he initially ran to help push incumbent councilor Nelson Peters out of office. MacIsaac he’s been considering dropping out since Peters dropped out of the race himself. After talking with D’Auteuil he was convinced, he said.

“I also think that I underestimated how much time the job will take,” he said. McIsaac coaches boy’s lacrosse for Edward Little High School in the spring, and said that the sport’s schedule would conflict with the City Council.

“That wouldn’t be fair to the boys, and it wouldn’t be fair to the city,” he said.
