The odor of the Androscoggin River was less troublesome this year than any year in the last 18 years.

This was the way Dr. Walter Lawrence of Bates College, administrator of the court decree on the river, summed up his work of the last few months.

He further pointed out that the river condition will probably be equally good during the coming two summers and may show a marked improvement again in 1962. By this time the Oxford Paper Co. will have completed a three-year, $15 million waste treatment plant allowing it to burn a large amount of the waste that now must be dumped into the river.
