SUMNER — Road Commissioner Jim Keach explained to selectmen Tuesday night that drainage from Abbott Pond Road is having adverse effects on Redding Road.
According to the Maine Municipal Road Manual, improper drainage is the leading cause of road deterioration. State law authorizes municipalities to construct ditches, drains and culverts when necessary either along the road or over adjoining private property to properly care for a road.
A resident of Abbott Pond Road has said that work Keach was doing at Abbott Pond and Redding roads was causing problems to her private road.
Selectmen encouraged Keach to ask permission and explain what he planned to do before beginning work that would protect the town road.
In other news, a rabies clinic was announced for Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Fire Station. Shots will cost $10 each. Town Clerk Susan Runes said there were 219 dogs that were licensed.
One application was received for the position of animal control officer. Selectman Mary Ann Haxton said she would do the follow up procedures on the application.
The responsibility of snow plowing for the helipad at the municipal center was discussed. Runes said she would find out the cost and talk with the auxiliary who has paid for the pad to see what their plans were concerning the plowing.
A quarterly report for the Transfer Station Swap Shop was given. It showed more than 18,000 pounds of items leaving the shop for new homes this quarter. The shop addition has been completed with grant and town money. Money donations for items taken from the shop will go toward the project.
More volunteers are needed to handle the crowds on Saturday.
