100 years ago, 1909

George E. Merrill of West Durham has recently harvested 3,050 bushels of potatoes which he raised on 12 acres of ground. This is the largest crop that was ever raised in the town. Mr. Merrill has been interested in potato raising for several years and has been very successful. His largest yield was from 8 acres which produced 1,050 bushels, making an average of 350 bushels to the acre. The largest potato weighed 2 pounds, 10 ounces.

50 years ago, 1959

Lewiston City Clerk Lucien Lebel reminded club owners yesterday that liquor licenses expire Dec. 31 and he urges that applicants not wait until the last minute.

Applications for malt, spirituous and vinous liquor permits have to be published for six consecutive days before a city council meeting, he noted, and the council only holds regular sessions twice a month — on the first and third Tuesdays. When approved by the aldermen, the applications go to the Maine State Liquor Commission for final approval and issuance.

25 years ago, 1984

Hunters who wish to purchase 1985 hunting and fishing licenses at 1984 prices have until Nov. 30.

Prices for all licenses in 1985 have been increased, but the state is giving early purchasers an opportunity to save money if they buy next year’s license before Dec. 1, by allowing them to buy them at the cheaper 1984 prices.
