LEWISTON — L and A Veterans Council Chairman Paul Bernard and past Chairman Bert Dutil have announced the Veterans Day activities.
A ceremony honoring veterans will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. The ceremony will feature the Army Band, followed by the MAINEiacs game.
The Lewiston High School U.S. Army Cadets will have their third
annual free Veterans Day breakfast for area veterans and their families from 7 to 8 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 156 East Ave. The breakfast will be served by the Green Ladle culinary arts students and will include eggs, ham, beans, biscuits, coffee, juice, water and fruit. At 10 a.m. on Nov. 11, the L and A Veterans Council will sponsor a musical tribute to veterans at the Lewiston Armory. At 9:30 a.m., all color guard groups including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War, AMVETS, Marine Corps League, Franco American War Veterans, Knights of Columbus, fire and police color guards will pass in review.
The Lewiston, Edward Little and Leavitt high school bands and the Just Us Entertainers will perform. All additional color guard groups, including military, veterans organizations, auxiliaries fraternal, social and youth organizations will also line up for pass and review. The Civil Air Patrol 077 Squadron will greet and assist veterans and their families.
At 12:15 p.m., the Fire Department Color Guard will hold a brief ceremony at the William Rogers American Legion Post 153, New Auburn. Six firehouses will serve chili and corn bread.
At 1:30 p.m., the L and A Veterans Council will hold a brief unveiling ceremony of the 18th veterans memorial stone, bringing the total names of veterans to 3,887. Terry Leavitt of Millinocket, state commander of the Disabled American Veterans, will unveil the stone which bears the DAV logo.
A memorial bench in honor of Robert E. Buchanan, WWII veteran, who served in the Army Air Corps as a navigator in the 500th Bomb Squadron known as the Rough Raiders, will also be unveiled.
