BUCKFIELD — An early morning fire destroyed a mobile home on Sunday at 209 East Buckfield Road.
Philip Whitmore Jr., who lived alone, was not at home. A tree cutter for Lucas Tree Experts, based in Portland, he was working during the night with Central Maine Power crews to clear trees from electrical lines.
Despite the high winds, the fire was extinguished without problems, Buckfield Fire Chief Steve Campbell said. No one was hurt.
“It was fully engulfed when we got there,” Campbell said. “Part of the structure remains standing, but it is a total loss.”
It’s unknown what caused the fire, he said. An inspector from the State Fire Marshal’s Office is scheduled to examine the rubble on Monday.
Meanwhile, Whitmore will try to get by, said his mother, Irene.
“It’s all gone,” she said. He had no insurance.
Irene’s sister, Doris Murphy, called in the fire just before 3 a.m. Sunday. She was staying with Irene and Philip Whitmore Sr., who live next door to their son, when Mr. Whitmore discovered the blaze and woke them both.
In all, fire crews from five towns answered the emergency call. Besides Buckfield firefighters, crews from Hebron, Turner, Paris and Sumner were alerted.
Irene Whitmore said her son will have difficulty replacing everything he lost. Among his belongings was a collection of antique chain saws.
