Jean Mitchell
1924 – 2009
AUBURN — Jean Mitchell, 85, of Lewiston died early Monday, Dec. 7, at The Hospice House.
She was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Phillips, the daughter of Alton P. and Helen H. (Perrin) Edwards. She was educated in the schools of Phillips graduating in 1941. She married Everett Mitchell on June 13, 1942 in Phillips, who passed away on Oct. 1, 1985.
She moved from Phillips to Farmington in 1970. She worked for Forster Manufacturing Co. in Strong for 10 years before owning and operating coin operated laundries in Phillips and Strong for several years. In 1970, she owned and operated The Cedar Craft Gift Shop in Farmington for six years. She then worked for Western Area Agency on Aging in Farmington for five years retiring in 1985.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Farmington Ward, holding many callings including Relief Society President for many years, through which she served a mission in Vancouver, British Columbia. She was a member of Merrill Rebekah Lodge and past president of The Rebekah Assembly of Maine, a past president of The Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant of Maine, a former member of The Phillips Grange, a member of The Order of The Amaranth of Farmington, The American Legion Auxiliary, Prescott Fairbanks Post, and WWI Barracks. She enjoyed reading and was an avid reader.
She is survived by two daughters, Esther M. Bennet and her husband, Warren, of Lewiston and Ruth Marden and Clint Cushman of Wilton; four grandchildren, Joseph, Vernon, Aaron and Tanis; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Emily; a sister, Nathalie St. Clair of Auburn; and a brother, Ronald Edwards of Windham.
She was predeceased by her husband; a daughter, Helen Scamman; and a brother, Neal Edwards.
