Investigators reported Monday that a Vienna man found dead in his home early Sunday afternoon is believed to have died from injuries sustained several days earlier while attempting to cut down a tree.
Peter Miller, 49, was found inside his Anderson Road cabin by a friend who went to check on him after not hearing from the self-employed handyman for several days. Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said that an autopsy completed Monday by the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta determined that Miller died of blunt force trauma to the head and neck.
McCausland said that investigators found Miller’s chainsaw a short distance from his cabin and evidence that he was likely hit by a tree he was cutting down. The death has been ruled accidental and is believed to have happened several days ago.
“We feel that it’s an accident and most likely he sustained his injuries cutting down a tree,” McCausland said. “He somehow made his way back to the cabin and died there.”
The cabin is located off Anderson Road and Miller lived there alone. McCausland said he did not know if Miller had a phone or whether he tried to call for help.
