MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) – The Peace Corps says Vermont and Maine are among the nation’s top volunteer-producing states per capita in 2009.
Vermont is ranked No. 1 on a per-capita basis with 60 Peace Corps volunteers, as of Sept. 30.
Maine is ranked third with 75 active volunteers calling the state home.
Among metropolitan areas, the Burlington-South Burlington area is ranked 7th for the rate of volunteers per capita, while the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford area of Maine is ranked 10th nationally.
Since 1961, Vermont has turned out 1,380 volunteers and Maine 1,705 volunteers for the organization, which serves in 139 countries.
