AUBURN — The Lewiston Auburn Alliance for Services to the Homeless (LAASH) will sponsor a candlelight vigil from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, in memory of all those who are homeless and those who have died homeless.
The vigil will be held on the corner of Court and Turner streets, across the street from Auburn Hall and the Androscoggin County Courthouse.
“The vigil, which has been held for nearly a decade on the Lewiston side of the bridge, is being held across the river in Auburn this year,” said Bob Rowe, chairman of the committee. “The cities of Lewiston and Auburn work very effectively to provide important services to the homeless. Among these services are a shelter overflow program and a rent security deposit program staffed by city personnel and LAASH volunteers.”
The alliance and the cities of Lewiston and Auburn have recently adopted a 10-year plan to end homelessness in the communities. John O’Brien from the United States Interagency Council on Homeless, and an advisor to LAASH, worked with the local group as it developed its plans, and will speak about ending homelessness at the vigil.
To learn more about the Lewiston-Auburn plan to end homelessness, call Larry Marcoux at the United Way of Androscoggin County at 795-4000. To participate in local efforts to assist the homeless, the Lewiston Auburn Alliance for Services to the Homeless meets at noon the first Wednesday of every month, at Lewiston City Hall.
