LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine will offer Zumba, for ages 14 and up, at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and at 5:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursdays. A four-week session of ZumbAtomic, for children ages 4 to 7, will be offered from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturdays, Jan. 9, 16, 30 and Feb. 3.
“Most people have never experienced a workout quite like Zumba before,” said Cynthia Nicholas, the class instructor. “Zumba has become a fitness sensation.”
Zumba combines a fusion of Latin and world music with a dance theme to create a dynamic and effective fitness system. Zumba utilizes principles of aerobic/fitness interval training and resistance training to maximize caloric output, fat burning and total body toning. It is a mixture of body sculpting movements with easy-to-follow dance steps.
“I am proud that through my partnership with the YWCA of Central Maine, we are able to bring the first ZumbAtomic class to L/A,” said Nicholas. ZumbAtomic uses the Zumba Fitness concept with kid-friendly songs, dances and movement.
Zumba classes are $10 each class at a drop in rate. Discounted punch cards are also available and are good for any Zumba classes at the YWCA. The four-week ZumbAtomic session costs $35. All classes will take place in the gym at the YWCA of Central Maine, 130 East Ave.
Cynthia Nicholas will instruct both Zumba for adults and ZumbAtomic. Nicholas was the first Zumba instructor in the Lewiston-Auburn area. In 2006, she completed her first Zumba training in Dayton, Ohio, with Beto Perez, the founder of Zumba. She recently attended the 2009 Zumba convention, completing workshops in Zumba Basics 2 and ZumbAtomic.
Limited space is available for the classes. Register by calling the YWCA of Central Maine at 795-4050 or via e-mail at [email protected].
