A group hoping to establish a resort and casino in Oxford County said they plan on turning in close to 100,000 signatures to the Maine Secretary of State’s office on Tuesday, in an effort to put their ballot initiative before Maine voters next November.
Black Bear Entertainment, the group seeking approval for a new casino, must have 55,087 signatures approved by Secretary of State Matt Dunlap in order to move forward with their proposal.
If successful, the measure would be brought before the Legislature. Typically with citizen initiatives lawmakers vote against the proposal so voters can weigh in during the next election, which would be in November.
Recent statewide votes on casino proposals have failed.
