Saturday was the last of the eight shortest days of the year as regards the hours of daylight. While the hours of daylight have already begun to lengthen, the increase will be slow for the rest of the month and at the end of the year will have gained three minutes. According to the old adage: “When the days begin to lengthen the cold begins to strengthen,” there should soon be something doing in the way of winter weather.
50 years ago, 1959
An estimated 1,200 persons visited the newly constructed headquarters of Ste. Famile Federal Credit Union, 525 Sabattus St, yesterday during an open house program in the morning and a buffet luncheon last night.
St. Famile was founded in 1936, the first local organization of its kind. Until the new $43,000 home was completed, its offices had been in the home of its treasurer-manager, Alfred P. Dumais, 478 Sabattus St. It is the first local credit union to build its own headquarters.
25 years ago, 1984
A five-year contract with the city of Auburn for secondary school students to attend Edward Little High School has been approved by the Mechanic Falls School Committee.
The committee’s action specified that high school tuition for local students will be paid only for those attending ELHS and that the contract be for five years.
