Friends of Miss Lena Hurley of New Auburn are congratulating her on her escape from drowning while skating on the river the other day. Miss Hurley was out with friends on the river when one of her skates broke and she fell headlong into an open space and was rescued only after some difficulty. She was taken quickly home and is now no worse for the experience.
50 years ago, 1959
Lewiston’s Board of Health and Welfare probably will hire a new clerk-stenographer for the welfare office next week.
Health and Welfare Director Robert Y. Baillargeon told the board yesterday he has already received three applications and that others are expected this week. It was indicated that the new clerk will be picked Monday when the board next meets.
Miss Carmelle Laplante left the post after two years to accept a better-paying job.
25 years ago, 1984
The first meeting of the new year for the Maine Public Relations Council will be held Jan. 17 at Happy Jack’s Restaurant in Lewiston. The meeting will be a dinner and panel discussion featuring members of the Maine news media.
Print media representatives attending will be Tom Kelsch, editor of The Lewiston Sun-Journal’s Sunday; Jerry Harkavy, bureau chief of The Associated Press in Portland; Charles Todorick, managing editor of Maine Today magazine; Candace Kanes, managing editor of the Brunswick Times Record; and Stephen Riley, managing editor of the Portland Press Herald.
