LEWISTON — Surgeons are in the money. Bartenders … much less so.
For the third year, the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce asked the state to jog statistics on local job and wage numbers. The list of 295 occupations in the Lewiston-Auburn area and wages paid for the third quarter of 2009 came out last week.
Chamber President Chip Morrison said companies use the figures this time of year to help figure out what to pay employees and new hires in the year ahead.
None of the new numbers came as a surprise, Morrison said. “Wages haven’t gone up very much in the past year. That’s the economy.”
“I really want to laud the Department of Labor,” he added. “They don’t have to do this.”
The report, on the chamber’s Web site, shows that the 49,290 jobs estimated in this area pay an average estimated $17.73 an hour. The report does not offer comparison wage figures for other areas or statewide, nor does it compare to previous years.
For surgeons — 20 work locally — that figure’s much higher, $107 an hour. For bartenders — 160 work locally — wages average $8.54 an hour.
