PARIS — Absentee ballots are now available for voters wishing to participate in the two recall elections for selectmen on Feb. 1 and 5.

Interim Town Clerk Elizabeth Knox said ballots may be obtained from the town office, marked there immediately and turned back in, or they may be taken out, marked and returned to the office no later than 8 p.m. on the day of the election. As of Wednesday morning, 21 people had cast ballots, and six others had taken ballots out.

Polls will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 1 and 5 at the South Paris Fire Station on Western Avenue, Selectman Raymon Glover said.

The town passed a recall ordinance in November and has since received petitions calling for board Chairman David Ivey and members Troy Ripley, Glover and Lloyd “Skip” Herrick to be recalled from office. The petitions for Ivey and Ripley state that signers have “lost confidence” in the two, while the petitions for Glover and Herrick say signers have “lost faith in [the selectmen’s] ability to make important decisions and faithfully act in the best interest of the whole town of Paris.”

The recall vote for Ivey and Herrick is set for Feb. 1; the vote for Glover and Ripley is Feb. 5.

Voters will also decide at a special town meeting Thursday, Jan. 7, whether to accept a revised recall ordinance brought to the town by petitioners. The ordinance calls for stricter standards for recalling elected officials and seeks to nullify the existing ordinance. No absentee ballots are available for this meeting.
