Bowdoin 52, Bates 49

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College survived a defensive struggle to stay undefeated with a 52-49 women?s basketball victory over Bates.

The Polar Bears (10-0) used a 14-2 spurt to take a 38-23 lead with 15 minutes to play. Katie Bergeron sparked the run with a pair of three-pointers for the Polar Bears.

Bates (8-4) connected on four 3-pointers in a seven-minute span to close the gap. Caitlin Hynes iced the game with a pair of free throws for the Polar Bears, who were held to a season-low in points.

Hynes was one of three Polar Bears who finished with a dozen points and added eight boards. Bergeron and Kaitlin Donahoe also added 12 points apiece, while Leah Rubega scored 11. Allie Beaulieu scored a team-high 16 points for the Bobcats.

Vermont 80, Maine 49

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont
hit eight first half 3-pointers, building a 31-point halftime lead that
held up in an 80-49 women?s basketball win over Maine.

Courtnay
Pilypaitis led Vermont (12-3) with 18 points, including four treys.
Samantha Wheeler scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds for
Maine (4-10). Katia Bratishko and Corinne Wellington each added nine
points.

Briarcliffe 68, Central Maine CC 53

AUBURN – Danielle Eagan scored a game-high 22 points and Nina Creese added 19 to lead Briarcliffe College of Bethpage, N.Y., to a 68-53 triumph over Central Maine Community College on Thursday.

The Seahawks (6-4) led 34-32 at the break and never looked back, wearing the Mustangs down with aggressive, up-tempo play in the final frame.

Sara Martin buried five 3-pointers to lead the Mustangs (6-3) with 15 points, and Teira Durgin complemented a stellar defensive effort with 12 points. Christy McAuliffe added seven points and Danielle Hebert contributed five.

Men’s basketball

Vermont 64, Maine 56

ORONO — Maurice Joseph scored 20 points and Vermont defeated Maine 64-56 in men’s basketball Thursday night.

The
Catamounts (11-5, 2-0 America East) trailed 25-20 with 4:29 left in the
first half, but outscored the Black Bears 18-3 throughout the next
6:25. Garvey Young gave the Catamounts a 38-28 lead on a layup with
18:04 left in the game.

Maine (8-6, 0-1) answered one more time on a 15-4 run, taking a 43-42 lead on Terrance Mitchell’s layup with 14:10 to go.

Evan
Fjeld finished with 11 points and Marqus Blakely added 11 points and 13
rebounds for Vermont, which won its third straight. Mitchell finished
with 13 points as the Black Bears snapped a three-game win streak.
