OTISFIELD — The town’s annual two-day Winter Carnival will coincide with the beginning of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver on Friday and Saturday, with events scheduled to begin on the same night as the opening ceremonies.
A free variety show will be held at 6 p.m. at the Otisfield Community School on Friday. The show will include a student play titled “The Plight of Princess Snow White.”
From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, a free ice fishing derby will be held on Thompson and Pleasant lakes. No license is required, as it is a state of Maine free fishing day. Participants can register and weigh in at the New Outpost store.
A new event this year will allow residents to make and race sleds made of cardboard and duct tape. Cardboard will be available at the town office and transfer station during regular business hours. Registration begins at 12:45 p.m. at the town office; the races will take place at 1 p.m. on the hill behind the office. Prizes will be awarded for the fastest and most creative sleds.
Olympic-themed games and a bonfire will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the town beach. From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., horse-drawn carriage rides will tour the Seeds of Peace International Camp.
