Aldee Frechette, 77, of Lewiston was injured when he fell asleep and crashed his 1996 Jeep in Sabattus on Saturday, police said.

SABATTUS — An elderly Lewiston man was being treated at Central Maine Medical Center on Saturday night after suffering injuries when his Jeep left the road, rolled over, went airborne and crashed.

Aldee Frechette, 77, was having back pain and was bleeding when found in his vehicle, police said. No information about Frechette was available Saturday night, according to Central Maine Medical Center.

Frechette fell asleep while driving at about 1 p.m., crossed the highway and hit an embankment, which sent his vehicle “spinning in the air,” Sabattus police officer Ralph DeStefano said. One witness said the vehicle went as high as 10 feet and as far as 20 feet. It landed on its tires.

“He was conscious and alert when I got here,” DeStefano said. “I cut the roof off. I got in there and literally put the roof on my back. I didn’t want the roof to fall on the guy once we started cutting.”

Frechette told police he was at his grandson’s hockey game and had fallen asleep behind the wheel.

The driver was wearing his seat belt, and the Jeep’s air bag went off, “which is great,” DeStefano said. “This could have been a lot worse.”

No other vehicle was involved. The 1996 Jeep was destroyed.
