America, 2009-10: The government discovered how a greedy individual was capable of cheating and deceiving so many people, causing them to lose everything they had invested in him.

The government had to bail out major banks and auto industries while other financial institutions were on the verge of bankruptcy. Greedy CEOs and other banking executives issued exorbitant bonuses despite problematic economic insolvency. Federal government officials had problems dealing with the economy, unemployment, health care, the war in Afghanistan and a breach of security that could have been a victory for the Taliban.

Haiti, 2010: A tragedy of the magnitude that struck Haiti was a warning sign from above. We are not invincible and should not take life for granted because, someday, we could face the inevitable destruction by an act of God or by terrorist attacks.

Closer to home: For some of us, life has changed dramatically due to medical reasons, the loss of loved ones and family issues. Yet our problems don’t compare to the suffering and death the people of Haiti have to cope with.

We have a lot to be thankful for and all the more reason not to take life for granted.

Robert Lacombe, Sabattus
